December 3 Calvin EcoPreserve First Saturday

We love the Calvin EcoPreserve First Saturday programs!  Heading out to a nature program might not seem like a ‘holiday’ thing to do; but since Calvin is a Christian college they always manage to talk about God’s creation during the programs.

The December 3 program is“First Snow in the Woods” from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. You’ll learn how animals survive the winter; what birds stay around when it starts to snow, what are the adaptations that the White tailed deer has to help it survive the coldest time of year and more!

They’ll read the story The First Snow in the Woods and families will observe winter birds, get hands-on experience with deer artifacts, create a bird feeder for their own backyards, and spend time outside looking for animal signs.

Keep up with all of Grand Rapids’ culinary, cultural, and community events that your kids (and your wallet) will love!  Subscribe to my RSS feed, get Big Binder by email, follow me on twitter, or become fan on Facebook.

Technology + Nature = AWESOMENESS at Blandford

A few weeks ago, I chaperoned a field trip to Blandford Nature Center with Maybelle’s class.  This meant driving 25 minutes with four Kindergarten girls in my van.  Four very chatty Kindergarten girls.  In my van.  For 25 minutes. And for reasons known only to school administrators, parents are not allowed to have the radio on while chaperoning.

This is not the part of the story where technology was awesome.

Once we got to Blandford {and my ears stopped bleeding}, I remembered that the kids and I had discovered something very cool there this summer.  While Miss Kristin had story time with the Kindergarteners, I was showing all of the parents the very cool Blandford Nature Center App and then stood over their shoulders to make sure they downloaded it.   THIS is the part of the story where technology is awesome.

Once the app is on your phone, at different points around the Nature Center you can scan QR codes on plaques.  An audio clip plays, and tells you what you are looking at.  It’s like a personal tour!  And it’s not all weird and polished sounding; it’s like a real guy telling you interesting things about a cool place.  There is also a map, and some other information you can access too.  I am not ashamed to say that when I see that little owl on my phone, it makes me smile. It is an android app, so I’m afraid you iPhone folks will have to wait.

Kids from the Blandford School showed up after story time and took the kids off into the woods, leaving all of the chaperones alone with our phones and QR codes.  And there we were; a bunch of dorky grown ups, riveted by a podcast on the diet of an owl.  Quite the sight.

I know it’s getting chilly, but it’s still beautiful outside.  If you’re looking for a way to decompress and have some fun with your kids, it’s a good time to head over to Blandford.  You have my full permission to listen to the radio all the way there, too.

First Saturdays at Calvin – Discover The Wild Turkey

We cannot get enough of the First Saturday programs at the Calvin EcoPreserve!  The next one is November 5 from 10:00 to 11:30 am and as always, it is free.

This is what they say about it:

Do you have questions about the Wild Turkey? Come to this family oriented program to learn more! Participate in activities and stories designed to help you and your family understand more about turkeys. One lucky volunteer will be transformed into a wild turkey as we work together to learn the various parts of this animal! And children and adults alike will have fun pretending to be wild turkeys during our survival game. A fun turkey craft will also be available for families to create at the end of the program

Pick me! Pick me! I would be an awesome turkey.  I just know it.

Will we see you there?!

This is a “Fun Family Events” Calendar item.  Check it out for more great frugal community activities your family will love!

Harvest Festival October 15 Blandford

Blandford’s Annual Harvest Festival is October 15 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This is ALWAYS a good time, with horse-drawn wagon rides, candle dipping, scarecrow making, pumpkin painting, the apple press will be in operation making fresh cider, and all the historic building will be open. They also have rope making, blacksmith demonstrations, felt making demonstrations, and their hawks and owls will be on display.

Admission is $5 per person, kids 3 and under are free. Food will be available for purchase, but if it’s the same as past years they are not very pioneer-ish – hot dogs and potato chips.

First Saturday Programs at Calvin EcoPreserve October 1

Yay! It’s back! The First Saturday events at Calvin Eco-Preserve are AWESOME programs held the first Saturday of every month.  We went last year and had an amazing time, they do a fantastic job and are geared towards children, reverent to God, and very educational.  Win, win, win!

This Saturday is a Nature Art Open House, and it runs from 10-12 in the morning. It’s a great tie in to ArtPrize, as children are invited to create their own art work out of natural and recycled materials. They will have stations set up both inside and outside featuring some of the most popular art activities from summer camps and some new ones. From making critters out of leaves and clay to capturing the image of a plant using special sun print paper, everyone will have fun using their creativity to design their own art pieces. All materials are provided.

Half off a Family Membership at Blandford Nature Center!

Today’s Groupon is 52% a family membership and a Saturday Workshop at Blandford Nature Center! It would normally be $60, but now it’s only $30!

It’s my favorite place to pretend I’m a homeschooler while I still have one child only going half days to ‘real’ school. We also love the Harvest Festival, which is coming up in October and Sugarbush, the celebration of maple syrup in the Spring.

Click here for the link to Groupon.  Hope to see you at Blandford!
