Things To Do Thursday

Anything fun planned for the weekend? I am trying to pick between a few goodies.  I thought February was supposed to be boring!

  • At Breton Village Mall, the Cabin Fever Reliever is Saturday from 10:30-12.  Joel Tanis (from Come On Over!) will be there, as well as a ‘group art project’, musical activities, and reading games.
  • If you were thinking more outside-ish stuff, there is a Winter Family Day at Meijer Gardens on Saturday from 1-3.  They always put on a good event, but I know it’s one of the pricier places if  you don’t have a membership, maybe you could check out a membership from the Grand Rapids Public Library for the day.
  • Also on Saturday from 11-3 is the 8th Annual (I think I’ve been to almost every one of them!) GRCC Family Matters Event.  It gets bigger and better every year.  It’s swag city for kids, seriously take a bag for all the little goodies they will get.  It’s free, but there is a $3 charge for parking.

The “Planning Meeting” for the my husband’s annual Insane Bike Ride To the Mackinaw Bridge is Saturday at my house, so I need to spend a few minutes figuring out what to feed a flock? gaggle? pelleton? – whatever you call a group of crazy bikers – for dinner.

We have been keeping Sundays pretty low key for a few months and are really seeing the value of a day of rest.  We’re going to a Griffins game on Sunday though – one of those nice afternoon matinees.  GO GRIFFINS! By the way, my kids think Finn is Griff’s wife.  They also think Robin is Batman’s wife, so we have some clarifications to make.  Anyway…the library is good to us… see if you can check out tickets from Grand Rapids Public, or show your Grand Rapids Public Library or Kent District Library Card at the box office on to get a lower bowl ticket for $10.

Another good reason to forgo your rest is Taste of Soul Sunday, a celebration of African American Culture at the main library downtown. For more weekend ideas, check out GR Kids and GR Now.

Workin' for the Weekend

There is just a TON of stuff to do this weekend.  I hope it’s nice outside!  It’s only Wednesday – but you might need a few days to develop a plan to fit all of this goodness in.

John Ball Park Zoo is having it’s Party For the Planetevent Saturday from 10-3.  This is fun, and there are lots of different organizations and activites that come out for this.  It’s $3.50 for adults, and $3.00 for children.

Don’t forget that Dairy Discovery is having a Family Fun weekend this Saturday.  It’s $5.00 per person, or $20.00 max per family.

The following events are all free:

The Grand Rapids Public Library is having a ton of stuff for Earth Week that kicks off this weekend:

  • An indoor farmers’ and artisans’ market.
  • Re-shirt (take an old shirt, and make something new from it)
  • Slow food presentation
  • Movies: Who Killed the Electric Car? and Wall-e
  • Musicians
  • Bio-diesel workshop
  • Clothes exchange
  • Rain Garden tour
  • Green Cleaning

The East Grand Rapids Kent District Library is having a Green Fair on Saturday at 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM with some very cool activities planned.

Michaels is having ”The Knack” crafting event Saturday rom 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.  You can make these ‘spring critters’.

This requires a drive, but admission is free on Saturday to the Kalamazoo Nature Center in honor of Earth Day.  It’s not easy to get free admission here, I think Earth Day is the only free event.  You won’t be disappointed!

This last one is so unique, and I am so excited about it.  Rob Bliss, who brought the Zombie Walk and Giant Pillow Fight to Grand Rapids, 

Bliss plans to hand out 30,000 pieces of sidewalk chalk at Rosa Parks Circle…to see what collective creative energy will bring to the core city. He hopes the Sidewalk Chalk Flood will bring the most age diverse crowd to downtown Grand Rapids of all his prior social experiments that received…national television coverage on CBS News last fall.

Feature Friday. Yes, I Know.

OK so it’s Saturday.  Does this mean tomorrow you can expect Something to Make Saturday, or Sanctuary Sunday?  I’d like to pretend I am trying to be suspensful and stir it up, but it’s much more mundane.  Just a few technical difficulties coupled with a late Griffins Game put me a whole day behind.  The lure of Dollar Beers and Dollar Dogs was just too much for us to resist.

Well, let’s get on with it then.  No news here; I am a huge library fan.  In addition to the excellent resources available to us from many different sources via Lakenet, did you know that you can actually use your library card to “check out” a ticket for admission to area attractions? Yep, that’s right.  An entire family can get into the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum, Meijer Gardens, John Ball Park Zoo and The Gerald Ford Museum for free? Sometimes symphony and opera tickets are available too!

Last year, we used a checked-out membership to visit Meijer Gardens around Christmas.  The cost for all of us to go would have been, well, a lot, so we felt very lucky that we could use the Library Pass. How it worked was that I got a pass at the Library, and just exchanged it for admission at the Gardens.  It was totally free.

Not much information is available online about this, so touch base with your local Grand Rapids Public Librarian for more details. At any given time there are a limited number of passes circulating, so also check to see when the pass for your attraction will be available.  I don’t know of KDL offering this program, but if anyone has information about it please let me know and I will post accordingly!
