Harvest Festival October 15 Blandford

Blandford’s Annual Harvest Festival is October 15 from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  This is ALWAYS a good time, with horse-drawn wagon rides, candle dipping, scarecrow making, pumpkin painting, the apple press will be in operation making fresh cider, and all the historic building will be open. They also have rope making, blacksmith demonstrations, felt making demonstrations, and their hawks and owls will be on display.

Admission is $5 per person, kids 3 and under are free. Food will be available for purchase, but if it’s the same as past years they are not very pioneer-ish – hot dogs and potato chips.

Things To Do

It’s a little early for the “Things to Do” post, but there are two contests for Playhouse Disney Live tickets to Saturday’s show and I wanted to give you all a fighting chance.  Head over to GR Kids and  Stacey Says to find out more and to enter.  Good luck!

The Zoo reopened Monday after a winter and budget induced three month closing, but there is a Grand Re-Opening Bash on Saturday.  Personally, I’m going to wait until the weather is a little warmer.  I know what you’re going to say. The animals are more active when it’s cold.  Here’s the problem with that:  I’m more cold when it’s cold.

The Home And Garden Show runs all weekend and while it isn’t exactly a kid’s event but they have a lot of kid-specific activities planned this year. I’m glad to hear that, because last year there were some professional sand castle builders who were very intense and serious about their craft, and a mob of kids who wanted to play in the sand and it got kind of ugly. There is nothing worse than getting the stink eye from a Sand Castle Builder.

The Grand Rapids Symphony presents Ferdinand the Bull Saturday.  If you can’t go to one of the school performances, this is worth going on the weekend.  It’s a fantastic book and your kids will love it.

Blandford Nature Center’s Sugarbush is back.  This is a fantastic and unique learning opportunity you will be hearing more about from me next week.  I love me some maple syrup and need an entire post dedicated to it’s harvest.

On Sunday,  a warmer, free-er event is happening at the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.  The Target Free Sunday series wraps up.  Get it while it lasts, folks.

Meijer Gardens brought back its butterflies.  Personally, they freak me out but I go every year. For the children.  We have a membership, but you can win tickets from GR Now too (hurry and enter by Wednesday!)  Or, check out the Circulating Membership for a free pass from the Grand Rapids Public Library.

Things I Love Thursday – Pretending I'm A Homeschooler

Well, hi there! I’m back! Work is over.  It has been for a month actually.  As much as I wanted to dive back into Big Binder – I had some home-work to do.  First, I had to fix my kids.  They got used to being in a large group of loud and semi-naughty kids with a fairly dispassionate adult tending to them.  We had some attitude adjustments to make. More difficult was re-adjusting their appetites.  Do you KNOW what they feed kids in daycare? It’s gross.  Everything is sort of a pale yellow color and exactly the same consistency.  I still get a little ‘bleccchh’ shiver when I think about it.

I think it’s only fitting that I re-emerge into the blogging world on a day I can participate in Things I Love Thursday.  Jill was one of several people who talked to me or took the time to write and encourage me to get off my butt and fire up Big Binder again.  It’s amazing to be thanked and encouraged to do what you love, so a big thank you to everyone who showed me the love and kept checking back in to see if I had started writing again.

My kids are both in half-day programs at school, so we have a lot of time for fun things in the afternoons.  Fortunately, living in what I think must be the homeschool capital of the universe, there is a lot going on.  It began to dawn on me that homeschooled kids go to a lot of performances, presentations, and seminars.  And then it dawned on me that although I send my kids to school, I am also a homeschooler.  Kind of. Well, sort of. OK maybe it’s a bit of a stretch, but I can live with that.

A few weeks ago, I called and got tickets to the ‘school’ performance of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s Lollipop Concert, Hansel and Gretel.  This was WAY better than going to the Saturday morning performance – it wasn’t as crowded and the majority of the kids showed up on busses so we got a way better parking spot.  The next performance is Ferdinand the Bull,  a book my kids love so we are not going to miss this, (even if we have to go to the Saturday performance.)  Just call the Symphony and ask when the school performances are, and get your tickets directly from them.

Next month, we are going to some homeschool programs at Blandford Nature Center.  Click on their website, then go to “Education Programs”, then “Homeschool Programs”.  I have two websites I like for finding more ‘homeschool’ opportunities.  First is Grand Rapids Learning Exchange.  It is really thorough and is a fantastic resource.  Next is the Homeschool Building website, although I just look at the calendar.  I don’t have enough guts to show up to anything – I’d be sniffed out as a phony in a second.  But seriously; why should the homeschoolers have all the fun :) ?  For more Things I Love Thursday, check out the Diaper Diaries.

Things To Do Thursday

I am not participating in Things I Love Thursday this week mainly due to the fact that two housebound days with two sick kids leaves me feeling not so love-y.

So I will press on, and look toward the weekend.  First on the agenda is the Lollipops Concert – Green Eggs and Ham.  This is a fantastic (and inexpensive) way to expose your kids to the symphony! More details are on the Calendar.

The Flick (was Dove) Family Film Festival begins tomorrow, so check the schedule and see if there is anything you want to see for cheap.  A link is on the calendar.

It’s Expo-mania this weekend.  The Forest Hills Community Expo, Rockford Community Expo, and Kids Expo are Saturday (links are on the Calendar).  Also, the 5th Annual – yes I have been to every single one – Camp & Summer Adventure Expo  is Saturday from 10:00AM-4:00PM at Centerpointe.  Admission is free, and it’s always fun to see what is offered around town for the summer.

Also on Saturday is the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre “Tales of Molly Malloy”,  there is more information in this blog post.

Sugarbush, the Maple Syrup festival at Blandford Nature center continues this weekend as well. Details are on the Calendar.

Sunday, the East Grand Rapids Library is having an “African Drums & Dance”.  This sounds noisy and fun.

There is a lot to enjoy this weekend. Have fun, and stay healthy!

Putting my Menu Plan Monday to shame

I just came across a new blog called Rice, Beans & Mixed Greens that I have found fascinating.  It is written by a woman named Maria who is undertaking a challenge of spending only $30 total on food between April 10 and May 9.  She will then donate the difference between this very small amount and what she usually spends to Blandford Nature Center and Mixed Greens.  She is also doing it to raise awareness of the dietary limitations facing people on a low income.

Although Blandford is no longer part of Grand Rapids Public Schools, Mixed Greens works very hard to connect kids with local food production systems through on site programs at Blandford as well as school vegetable gardens and kitchen classrooms.

I am a definite ’feeder’.  I like to cook for people.  The charities that always pull on my heartstrings most are those that provide food for people who need it.  It is hard for me to see people hungry, either by choice or by circumstance.  I have the urge to send Maria food.  Unfortunately, she has set up a list of rules that would not allow for this. She will, however, allow herself to forage for food. Maria, come on over.  I have a cheese and crackers tree in my back yard; have at it!

I am going to add this blog to my blogroll while the project is current so that you can follow along as well if you are interested.
