Tide Coldwater – Can I Do It?

Laundry.  OH, I love it.  I do.  And like all long-lived loves, our relationship has changed over time.  I line dried for two years, but developed an irrational fear of bed bugs and have gone back to the dryer.  I know it’s terrible for the environment.  Or maybe it’s just a minor infraction, I’m not actually sure.

I was asked to try Tide Coldwater.  I hesitated at first, because in my house, whites are bleached, washed in hot water, and then dried on hot.  After thinking it through, I realized that this might just be the thing to absolve me of my sins.

First, and possibly most important is the smell.  It smells SO good.  Tide has a particular smell.  It smells like expensive.  In a good way, but still.  There is something deliciously high-falootin’ about how Tide smells.

I didn’t have any terrible stains, so I can’t say how Tide Coldwater did with getting set in stains out but it should be noted that I have an 8 year old boy who is covered in dirt and grass 30 seconds after he goes out for recess, and a 6 year old daughter who describes herself as “just the kind of person that always has paint on her hands” {and her shirt, and her pants…} so my family’s laundry is no small feat.

I am happy to report that even though I did not wash my whites in hot water (but I did use bleach; let’s not get ourselves all crazy here) and used Tide Coldwater instead my clothes still got clean! Everything seemed fine and I told the voices in my head to shut it; that my towels are TOO clean.  And they are.  And the environment is better for it.

So is my gas bill, since I don’t have to pay to heat water for laundry.  I’m still a little psycho about the hot water idea, but the amazing smell, clean clothes, and saving money are definitely winning me over.

Have you tried Tide Coldwater? What did you think?

I’m Giving Away My New Workout Partners..

Good things happen when I work out.  I have fewer migraines.  I get to use fancy shampoo.  I feel better.  But these things all come at a cost, paid for with sweat.

And in case you are one of those girls who can run a half marathon and have a few little perspiration beads across your forehead, I am here to tell you that sweat is gross.  I throw my nasty workout clothes in the laundry immediately, otherwise they stink up my gym bag.

I’m just keepin’ it real…

There is another problem with those workout clothes, too.  The higher end stuff has fabric that ”wicks” your sweat off of you, but when you try and de-funkify the smell, the oil in the fabric softener ruins the wicking fabric.

I’ve told you guys that I secretly love laundry and all things laundry related; and that Purex Crystals are one of my favorite laundry related items.  In a moment of perfect planetary alignment, I was able to try the newest Purex Crystals fabric softener flavor (wait, scent? Yeah. Probably scent.  Anyhoo..), “Tropical Splash” and the Jockey Tech Terry Performance Sports Bra.

If you’ve ever met me in person, you will know that my build demands that my sports bras work extremely hard, and should definitely include words like “tech” and “performance”.

Yup. That's totally not me.

I loved it.  Super comfy, and there is also a little key pocket.  It’s reasonably priced, but if you go here you can get a coupon for the 20% off the sports bra, so that’s even better.  I read some reviews of it before I got mine, and knew to order a larger size because one this seems to run small.

And the new flavor (er, scent) is delightful.  It kind of stays with you, so even after you have been wearing your clothes for a while, the smell still wafts up and hits you in the nose.  Until you get super sweaty and stink it up.

Want to try them both for yourself? I am excited to offer one reader a full sized sample of Purex Crystals and a  Jockey sports bar, chosen at random on January 23.  Life is complicated; Big Binder giveaways are not.  Just leave your name and email address on the form.  Good luck!

Before I start to sound like an awesome exerciser, let’s remember something.  I fell off the treadmill.  Mmm hmm.  Brilliant!  So don’t be all intimidated and weird about entering this contest because girl? Please.

Jockey and Purex provided free samples of their products so I could review them. However, all of the opinions expressed here are my own.

Purex Giveaway

Last year, I made a bold declaration.  I announced that I was giving up bleach.  Almost immediately, my friend Jill at The Diaper Diaries emailed me with only the words, “I’ll believe it when I see it”.

She never saw it.

I can’t quit you, bleach.  I tried.  I took out a second mortgage on my house and invested all-natural, locally sourced organic environmentally friendly laundry products.  I continued line-drying my clothes. But two things brought me to my knees.

The first was bugs. There was a lice epidemic at my kids’ school.  None of us got it, but I had phantom lice itch on my scalp for a month.  In fact, as I am writing this post, I am scratching. And, even though we stay in hotels about three times a year and bedbugs have not made their way to Michigan yet, I heard on the radio that using bleach and drying clothes on hot can kill both of those nasty beasts.

My clothes came down off the line, were washed in copious amounts of bleach, and went promptly into the dryer.

Second, the laundry products did not make my clothes smell good.  It didn’t make them smell bad, either.  There was no smell.  As a laundry aficionado, I realized that part of the pleasure I got from doing it was olfactory.  Laundry aromatherapy, if you will.

My sister accidentally left a bottle of  fabric softener at my house, so I decided to use it.  I had no idea what to do with it.  Put  it in with the soap? Pour it in the bleach hole? What the heck??

I got one of those little balls and even though I made a mess pouring it in every time; I used it.  As it turns out, bleach was just a gateway drug. I was now addicted to fabric softener.

Then I met Purex Crystals.  The best way I can describe it is this:  I had been wearing super cute, super slightly uncomfortable shoes.  Then I found some super cute, super comfortable shoes, and now I can’t go back.

Purex Crystals are actually little crystals, that you just dump right in with the soap.  The smell is wonderful. Like, “my husband noticed it” wonderful. And? It’s 92% natural.  I don’t know what the other 8% is and frankly, I don’t care.  92% is an “A”.

Would you like to try it?  You can follow Purex on Twitter.  Or, go and “like” Purex on Facebook and get a coupon.

Also… I have three free bottles of Purex Crystals to give away.

Just hop over to the Purex site and check out the different scents, then tell me which one you will chose if you win.  Good luck!

Things I Love Thursday – laundry (it’s true…)

TILTOne thing about me is that the longer you know me, the weirder I get. Every so often I will reveal shocking little facts like that I am related to my husband both by marriage and by blood. Or that I like disc golf.  Or that the only TV show I watch is the Bachelor. It’s time for me to peel off another layer and tell you the truth about something I am not always quick to share:

I love laundry.

Now before you get all annoyed with me, let me be clear that I do not love vacuuming, washing windows, dusting, making beds,  cleaning toilets, or being the only person in my house who appears to be capable of washing dishes (although Maybelle is showing some promise in this area).

So that pretty much covers everything in the housekeeping department.

Except laundry.

At one point in my life I seriously considered opening a laundromat. But that would be like a money crazed person wanting to work in a bank. Sure, you’re surrounded by what you love, but it’s someone else’s.  And they might not treat it right.

I took my love to a deeper place.  A greater commitment, if you will.  I participated in Gift of Green’s Clothesline Challenge two years in a row.  But now, I’m ready to go even further.

I’m going to give up bleach.

It pains me greatly to say that, because bleach is big for me.  I am not sure I can do it. My first step (after admitting I have a problem) is to stop bleaching the towels.  Well, the bath towels anyway.  The kitchen towels – that’s going to take some work.  There are an awful lot of germs on the kitchen towels and I’m not sure I can ever stop bleaching our undergarments.  Anyway, that’s too much detail for now.

I can’t ignore the environmental impact anymore.  Up to this point I have justified it by saying that at least I don’t use the dryer, so I have some carbon-footprint space to spare.  But after spending some time in coal-mining country looking at blown-off and listening to the oil “spill” (if that’s what they call a spill, then, Katrina was a light breeze) nightmare, I have to step up.  I don’t want to be part of the next big man-made disaster, if I can help it.

So how am I going break up with bleach and clean my clothes without killing the planet?  Well, first I am trying out an environmentally sound, locally made detergent.  You will absolutely hear more about that.  I am going to invite a friend to teach me (and you) how to make our own detergent.  And I am going to hope that I still love laundry… even if I am not 100% convinced that it is really clean.
