Gifts for the Teacher

It is time.

With the field trips, summer camp sign ups, permission slips, and year-end performances it’s easy to forget the people who are most excited about school ending:  the teachers.

I usually stick to consumable items – like gift cards and food.

  • We made Brownies In A Jar for Valentine’s Day.
  • Christmas gifts were restaurant gift cards, but we’ve also relied on  their tasty cousin, Chili In A Jar.  Easy.  Perfectly acceptable.
  • As a class gift (that can easily be tossed in the trash once the ‘artists’ have gone home for the summer without guilt), we’ve made Tissue Paper Flowers too.
  • I’m back in a ‘kit’ mood this year; much like my Grilling and BBQ Kit from a few years ago.
  • And before that; Ice Cream Party Kits.

Writing this post is really bringing to light the excessive amount of time I have spent putting together Teacher’s Gifts in the past four years.

It’s just kind of…what I do.  I saw this idea somewhere that I can no longer recall, and decided it would be this year’s project.  If I were a teacher, I would start looking forward to laying on the beach or by a pool and reading a nice book starting in about, oh, October. Beach towels are not consumable, of course, but how often do you think, “Man.  I really have to do something about all of these beach towels? They’re simply taking over my house.

First, I went to Tuesday Morning which doesn’t happen that often because on my side of town is kind of nasty and the people are grouchy.  It’s a shame.  But they have very, very nice, expensive beach towels for $15. I also grabbed some ribbon while I was there too, for about $3.00.

Then I found some sunscreen samples.  I was going to put a full sized bottle with the towels, but I am on a budget (you can see that I need limits, yes?) and that would have cut into the next part of the gift; Family Christian Bookstore gift cards.  Yes, my kids go to a Charter school.  Yes, it is a public school.  Unlike regular public schools though, students and teachers are actually allowed to talk about their own faith so I know that this choice of bookstores will not be any problem whatsoever :)

Here is the end result:

Do you ‘do’ teacher’s gifts?  What are you getting your kids’ teachers this year?

Zhu Zhu Wedding

Remember when we did Zhu Zhu Boo At The Zoo? My kids have been Zhu Zhu pet fanatics ever since! Maybelle was thrilled to have a party and invite some friends over for – get this – a Royal Zhu Wedding.

And while Kate and William had a nice gig – they had nothin’ on the Zhu Zhu pets.  There was a carriage, a castle, and a ballroom.

A.P. put together the set for Maybelle since he would be at school during the party.  He also got his Kung Zhus out to be ‘guards’ and attached a fitness center to the castle for the guards to train.

Here is a video of the ceremony, and the reception.  And they all lived happily ever after.

I received a Zhu-universe Royal Bridal kit.  All opinions are my own.

By request (did you know I took requests?) I have done a quick round up of Mother’s Day activities and ideas.

I am going to my Grandma’s house and hanging around in the backyard drinking wine with her while the rest of the family plants flowers. What are your plans for Mother’s Day?

B Kind 2 Earth – Get Outside!

Whoever decided late April was a good time to celebrate Earth Day was pretty smart.  We’ve been cooped up inside all winter, and it’s easy to forget what it’s like to go stomping around in the woods.

For Earth Day, Maybelle and I were treated to a tour of Amway’s Wildlife Preserve.  It’s a beautiful, 80 acre preserve with a certified Wildlife at Work program.  They bring in naturalists in to teach employees about animals, their habitats, and conservation.

The Preserve in near the Grand River, but has it’s own body of water; “Lake Amway”.  That is way catchier than “Wastewater Lagoon”; which is what was once there. Take a look at this video from our adventure!

Make Earth Day count for you and your family this year!! In all fifty states on Earth Day, families will get outside, appreciate our planet and do good things for the Earth – and their collective actions are going to count, big time. B Kind 2 Earth Day is a project of Nickelodeon, the National Wildlife Federation, TheMotherhood.com and incredible bloggers and organizations across the country.

Top Ten Tuesday – Pictures from Our Staycation

Top Ten {Tuesday}We had a fantastic Spring Break, right here in Grand Rapids.

The weather actually felt like Spring for a couple of days, and it truly was a break. I didn’t realize what a ridiculous amount of driving I do during the week; escorting my children hither and yonder. It was nice to have every destination simply be about having fun.  I took 10 million pictures last week, but since this is not “Top Ten Million Tuesday” Oh Amanda is gracious enough to host this fine carnival, I have complied with her guidelines and reigned myself in to the Top Ten pictures from our staycation.

1. The Aquatic Adventures of Johnny Starfish and the Mermaids from the Grand Rapids Ballet was awesome.  Johnny Starfish is a rock star, and the mermaids are his groupies.  The tickets were $5.00 each, and included pre-show entertainment and a nice little goody bag.

2.  The aforementioned pre-show entertainment included dressing up in costumes from previous shows.  I believe this was Peter and the Wolf.  Or maybe Wolfman Jack.  I’m not sure either of those were actually characters in a ballet performance, but they should be.

3. The Grand Rapids Art Museum is free on Tuesday afternoons, so of course that’s when we went. Kids could wear bird masks to get excited about the Audubon exhibit.

4. There was also a very cool printmaking activity.  I don’t know what this has to do with any exhibits, because I met a really nice mom and was talking to her instead of paying attention. (‘sup, Kelly!)

5. We had a delicious lunch at Art & Bev, which included enormous hot chocolate with a preponderance of whipped cream.  They were $1.00 each.

6. Maybelle is a little crafter, and completely got her fix at the library making this most excellent paper plate chicken.

7.  Less expected than a craft but equally excellent was a petting zoo.  A.P. got to feed a calf. At the library. In the city.

8. We had a fantastic time at Koetsiers Greenhouse.  Here is A.P. feeding the bunny before the kids took a tour, rode the Bee Train, and ate more than their share of snacks.  It was all very reasonably priced at free.

9.  The kids also got to do some planting.  Maybelle chose pansies, and A.P. chose watermelons.  Both plants are currently fighting for their lives under my care.

10.  The Gem and Mineral show was fantastic! It was like an incredible museum in the middle of Rogers Plaza.  Admission was free, but for $0.50 the kids got an egg carton and could choose 12 rocks (gems, minerals, whatever) and label them.  They LOVED it.

I spent a whopping $6.50 on each kid for everything you see here.  It was an amazing week and I felt very fortunate to have so many things to do with them.  How was your Spring Break?  I want to hear about it!

Did We Get The Grouchies Out?

First, I want to thank you SO MUCH for supporting the Great Start Parents Coalition Diaper Drive by purchasing Griffins Tickets to last night’s game.  This was a pre-launch event, so there will be more to come on the Diaper Drive.  Look for other ways you can give, and I may have some other tricks up my sleeve too.  You’ll just have to stick around and find out :)

We had a blast at the game.  It is usually my husband’s job to enjoy the Dollar Beers, but I took that responsibility off of his hands last night.  I’m just generous like that.

I have drawn all of the winners from this week’s “Get Out The Grouchies” giveaways so check your email if you entered any of the contests!  I genuinely hope it was fun for you!

The thing that I don’t like about giveaways is that only one person wins.  It’s why I don’t do a ton of them; I’d rather tell you about  fun, interesting and affordable opportunities for everyone.  You can find just that in my Play, Learn, Give post!  Look for a Kids Guide to Laugh Fest (similar to Kids Guide to ArtPrize) coming later this week too.

But if you still have a hankerin’ to win,  you can follow @AmwayLaughs on Twitter for more chances to get some LaughFest tickets.  And because I love love love you guys – I do have a giveaway for you tomorrow with five winners.  I’ll give you a hint:  Lent.  That’s it; you’ll have to wait until tomorrow to find out more!

Have a wonderful weekend!

President’s Day

February. Ugh.

I could end this post right there and have the majority of you agree wholeheartedly; but let’s press on together and make the most of this, shall we?

It was mighty generous of Presidents Lincoln and Washington both to be born in February so we can celebrate Presidents Day in this otherwise rather bleak month. I have a special fondness for President Lincoln.

  • First, because I went to the University of Georgia and that whole Civil War thing we don’t really think about much? Yeah – it’s still a big deal there.  We spent a lot of time studying the War, and the biggest takeaway I got was that Lincoln was an amazing leader.
  • Second, I am related to his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln.  I make less of this fact than I do of my kinship with Maybelle Carter, but it’s still a source of ancestral pride. Even if she was a little crazy.
  • Third, the house I grew up in was on Lincoln Street, which goes a long way towards cementing my favoritism.

We can learn more about Lincoln, Washington and all of the presidents from our homeboy, Gerald FordThe Ford Museum website has a great educational resource; mainly for upper elementary and middle school kids but some of the activities can be adapted for the young ones.

The Circle Theatre will be presenting “Honest Abe” at the Gerald R Ford Museum on February 17th and 18th.  I’m going to play the Country Day Homeschool card and see if I can get tickets for Maybelle and me.  For $5 each, we get to see the presentation, which is geared toward kids in Kindergarten through 5th grade and includes admission to the museum.

And of course, the cherries.  I posted a Cherry Pie recipe yesterday to round out your President’s Day celebration!

New Year’s Eve Video – Fun with kids in Grand Rapids

Happy New Year! We had so much fun last night! My voice is still hoarse from screaming at the Griffins Game or more accurately; screaming at the referees who were totally making bad calls.

Yeah, I’m that lady.

The Amway Family Area on the steps of the Grand Rapids Art Museum was a welcome refuge from the crowd at Rosa Parks Circle.  I saw a few of you there (hi!) and loved seeing the little kids rock out to Good Charlotte! We had so much fun I made a video of the evening.

Hope you enjoy it, and I’m wishing you all a very happy 2011!
