Last time we talked about Unilever’s Sustainable Living Plan, which not only includes environmental well-being, but also addresses health and well-being and enhancing livelihoods, I mentioned that we would be shopping for Unilever products and donating them to a food pantry.
It happens to be one that works closely with Feeding America to help Cross Off Hunger. Feeding America, the nation’s largest organization dedicated to fighting domestic hunger through a network of food banks. $1.00 equals 8 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local food banks. Unilever will donate $250,000. The monetary equivalent of a minimum of 2 million meals will be donated. It’s not dependent upon consumer purchase; they are just going to do it. There are many other ways to be part of this mission too; brands like Dove, Axe, Breyers, and Bertolli are also part of Unilever and programs designed towards improving self esteem in young women as well as environmental initiatives are all part of the mission.
We took our donation to United Church Outreach Ministries. Out of respect to the clients, we didn’t take any photographs inside but we were received very graciously by the staff for our small contribution. These are small items; easily added just a few at a time to a grocery list that over time can make up a great donation.
During the Food Pantry Cook Off, I became familiar with the “food pantry staple items”. These are items that folks can count on regularly being ‘in stock’. Of those items, a specific nutritional balance of foods people may take is broken down by what type of food it is.
Adding some Ragu Spaghetti Sauce here, or a Knorr Pasta Side there to these staples there can really spice things up! I put together some ideas to incorporate the Unliever products we donated into the food pantry staple items.
Bake Frozen Breaded Eggplant in Ragu Robusto Sauteed Onion And Garlic. Serve over cooked whole wheat pasta.
After cooking Knorr Mexican Rice, add ground beef. Place pickled jalapenos, chopped lettuce, and canned diced tomatoes on top.
Skillet Tuna Noodle Casserole
Prepare Knorr Pasta Sides Cheddar Broccoli. Mix in canned tuna and split peas.
Chop and saute onions. Add canned carrots, canned corn, canned green beans, canned chopped tomatoes, and sliced potatoes. Add Knorr Homestyle Beef Stock and water, then add canned pork.
Mix together chopped lettuce, cooked ground beef, and chopped canned tomatoes. Top with Western Salad Dressing.
Healthy Dinner Salad
Chop hard boiled eggs and toss together with kidney beans, lettuce, and Deluxe French Dressing.
Our donations went further because when we purchased the items to donate, it sent a message to Unilever that we are on board with their mission for Making Life Better. We are with them. We let our neighbors and community members at UCOM know that we care. We are with them.
