Things I Love Thursday {Keep Cup}

TILT thumb21 Things I Love Thursday {Keep Cup}It’s not so much that I am grouchy without my daily cup (or four) of coffee; it’s more that my synapses don’t fire without my receptors sufficiently caffeinated.  Don’t mind me while I make up a fictitious brain chemistry; I’ve only had half a cup so far.

I love love love coffee.  Whole bean, freshly ground, with just a little milk.  Preferably made with a French Press.  But that’s not what this is about.

It’s about the times that I find myself away from my precious grinder and press, and need a cup.  It happens more often than I’d like, and every disposable coffee in my minivan mocks me.  “You are so not environmentally cool.  And also, clean up your van.”

I was sent a new product to try, and it eliminates the mocking.  Call it an enabler if you must, but I dig this little Keep Cup.

410b325b022fd81a9e584fece170ff94b463eff1 wmlg 00001 Things I Love Thursday {Keep Cup}It comes with two different, removable bands that double as one of those cardboard thingys that keep you from burning your hand, and a personal name tag complete with your coffee choice to remind the barista of what you ordered.

I suppose there are two because apparently some people order different things at coffee shops.  Not I, but it is good to have a backup just in case.

Unlike disposable cups, the coffee actually stays hot.  The only barrier I ran into was when I used the drive through; I had to tell them I had my own cup so they had to wait until I got up to the second window before they could start making my drink.

eba009528d5e63051de019c60c8dacda26c400a7 wmlg 00001 Things I Love Thursday {Keep Cup}The cup is designed to fit in standard coffee shop machines, so once the baristas saw it they thought it was very cool.  With other re-usable cups, they said they have to make it in a disposable cup, then pour it into the customer’s reusable cup which totally misses the point.

You can design your own and choose different sizes and colors which is kind of fun!  They are BPA free and are also dishwasher safe, which are both good things.  Also, they have a fundraising component which seems very cool.

I love the Keep Cup! For more Things I Love Thursday, head over to the Diaper Diaries.

I received a Keep Cup to facilitate my review.  All opinions are my own.

Christmas Cookies For Birds {Bird Feeders}

I used to participate in a Christmas Cookie exchange, until my husband complained that he liked the cookies I baked and gave away better than most of the ones I came home with.  Awww…  So I stopped exchanging, and then we just ate our own cookies, and got fat.

I decided this year to get the cookie cutters out and use them to make treats for our feathered friends who do not fly south for the winter.  My kids  are Bird Nerds.  We have a Bird Book {complete with recorded bird calls}, and Bird Apps for the iPad, and generally talk about birds more than normal people.

The kids were very excited, but mid-way through A.P. announced that it was “not that exciting”.  Maybelle, with her quick wit, shot back with “Maybe not for you.  But it is for the BIRDS.”

So there.

Here is what you’ll need {based on a recipe from Family Fun; it made six ornaments}.

Birdseed Ornaments

  • 1 packet of unflavored gelatin
  • Water
  • 2 cups birdseed
  • Christmas Shaped cookie cutters
  • String
  • Waxed paper

Bring 6 tablespoons of water to a boil. Empty one 1/4-ounce package of unflavored gelatin into 2 tablespoons of cold water in a large bowl. Let the gelatin sit for 1 minute, then add the boiling water and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until the gelatin has dissolved.

Stir 2 cups of birdseed into the gelatin, mixing thoroughly.

Push the knotted end of one piece of string into each ornament.

Works For Me Wednesday {Non-Prescription Migraine Cures}

wfmw 300x1981 Works For Me Wednesday {Non Prescription Migraine Cures}This summer,  I started having horrible headaches.  They would last for a whole day – or more.  I thought it was the worst sinus infection in the world, and I just couldn’t get rid of it.  I spent most of June in a fog caused either by an internal banging in my head, or from a ridiculous amount of Tylenol Sinus.

Then the Tylenol Sinus stopped working.  Then I started getting sick to my stomach with my headaches.  I saw my doctor, and much to my surprise, I did not have a brain tumor.  I joke but… a few hours of foggy-minded Google searching and I cam really work myself up into a terrifying self-diagnosis.

As it turned out, I had been getting migraines.  My doctor suggested three things:

  1. Exercise for at least 30 minutes, every day.  Not five days a week.  Not six days a week.  Every day.
  2. Try eliminating certain foods to see if there are triggers.
  3. If all else fails, take some very strong medication.

I got another migraine before I could even test numbers one and two, so I took the medication.  It knocked me out for a few hours, but it worked.  I was very excited as I moved into the fall, armed with exercise and the medication as a back up.  I still haven’t found any food triggers, but I’m working on it.  I went for five whole weeks without a headache, and thought I had found a cure!

But no.  My headaches tend to cluster, so I rarely just get one and move on.  It isn’t really practical for me to be asleep for three days straight, so I needed to find other ways to cope with a migraine. It’s all trial and error, and suggestions from fellow sufferers.

  • Benadryl.  Isn’t that weird? But two Benadryl don’t incapacitate me as much as the migraine medication does, and often work just as well.
  • Ice packs.  Many people who get migraines can feel it in their necks first, as do I.  If I can lie down for a while with an ice pack  on the back of my neck (and maybe toss back a few Benadryl) I can sometimes cut the headache off before it starts.
  • Icy Hot patches (the kind for muscle soreness).  I just recently started using these, and since they are some sort of chemical they last longer than an ice pack.  They stick to your skin, so if you fall asleep and roll over, the icy hot goodness goes along with you.
  • Not eating.  I don’t mean ever, but once a headache starts I stop eating and drinking anything.  It sounds crazy, but it really has helped with the nausea.

If you get migraines, I hope my ‘research’ has helped.  Do you have something to add? I’ll try anything!

Tomato Potato Garbanzo Soup

Last week I set out to create a tasty, creamy but not heavy, filling, healthy soup.  I wanted a tomato soup, because it’s winter and that just seems right.  Fortunately, I had just been sent some new Red Gold Culinary Classics to try and they were perfect.  Then I just threw everything else that was hanging around in my kitchen.  Sometimes the best recipes are created this way. Granted, sometimes, this also leads to disaster.  But not this time icon smile Tomato Potato Garbanzo Soup

Tomato Potato Garbanzo Soup

finalsoup 300x168 Tomato Potato Garbanzo Soup

Heat up a pan of water (large enough to hold the potatoes) to boiling.  Meanwhile, scrub the potatoes.  Cook them for about 10-15 minutes, until soft but not mushy.  When they’re done, drain them in a colander and let cool.

While the potatoes are cooking and cooling, melt the butter in the pan you are going to make the soup in.  Saute the carrots for about 5-8 minutes, until they are getting a little brown.  While they are  sauteing, puree the tomatoes in a food processor or blender.  Add tomatoes to the carrots once they are sauteed.  Add the soup stock and turn the heat down to low.

Puree the potatoes in a food processor or blender.  Add them to the rest of the soup.  Then, add the garbanzo beans.  Simmer on low for about 20 minutes, or longer if desired.  The consistency is perfect almost immediately, and you just want to make sure everything is heated through.  Serve with Parmesan cheese.

I didn’t even add salt! The vegetables come together to create an amazing flavor, but it is comforting and creamy like tomato soup. The cheese adds a little tanginess, and it kind of has a minnestrone flavor to it.  It’s hearty enough that even without meat, served with a nice spinach salad we were completely satisfied. I might need a little help coming up with a catchier name {suggestions, anyone?}- but we all loved this soup, and I’m happy to make it for my family!

Winter Break Without Breaking The Bank!

Deep breath in…. we can do this friends! My kids do NOT understand the concept of sleeping in and we have already been up for hours putting together Legos and dressing like Barbie.  Did you know that Barbie says you can be a star, no matter what you are?

Fabulous.

It’s nice out.  Although Barbie’s advice is invaluable; the need to get out of the house will overcome us in no time.  We choose not to  drop a lot of cash on entertaining ourselves, and there is no reason that we should!  We have a great lineup of fun ahead!

How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

wfmw 300x198 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}Eating organic food is CRAZY expensive! The harder we try to be healthy, the more we find ourselves spending.   I did find one way to get my soup stock for free, which I use in soups but also instead of water to make rice, couscous, and other things that ‘soak up’ the cooking liquid.   It tastes wonderful, and it’s really good for you!

When I cook using onions, carrots, or celery I put the ‘scraps’ in a Ziploc freezer bag.  Also, if something is starting to get a little wobbly and not so fresh, I toss those in too. I just keep adding to it until it gets full.  I don’t always use organic vegetables, but I love using them twice when I do pay the extra price for them!

Also, when I cook chicken or turkey, I keep the bones in a (different) Ziploc bag.  I almost always cook a whole bird, then use the meat for different meals.  It’s way less expensive and it makes buying those $8.00 organic chickens a little easier.

When they get full, it’s time to make stock!

freezer 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

It’s very easy.  I just dump the veggies and chicken or turkey bones in a big pot.  Then, I cover it with water.

pan 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

I bring it to a boil, and turn it down to a low simmer.

simmer 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

I have a thing about foam; I think it’s gross, so if I see any I scoop it off.  I add water if it looks like it’s getting low and not everything is covered, but mostly I just leave it alone.

after six 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

For six hours.  That is the minimum; some folks simmer theirs for much longer, but I get bored, and would like to leave the house.

big stuff 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

I take the ‘big’ pieces out – the mushy vegetables and bones.

little stuff 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

Then I strain to get the little pieces out.

final 300x168 How I Get Free Organic Soup Stock! {Works For Me Wednesday}

I let it cool, and freeze it if I’m not going to use it in the next three or four days.  I used to let the fat harden on top and throw it away, but then I heard that the hard layer of fat that forms when it cools is a natural barrier to keep out bacteria and stuff, so I just let it hang out now.

It freezes perfectly, and it has a wonderful flavor that changes depending on how many of each vegetable you have.  Making free soup stock Works For Me!
