Full Swing. Without the Snow.

A snowstorm arrived in Michigan yesterday, but somehow magically flew right past Grand Rapids.  That never happens!

It seems like there should be snow, but maybe it’s good that there isn’t any.  There is a LOT to do.  So much, that I was getting a little nervous trying to figure out how I will fit it all in.  Snow would only slow me down.

Top Ten Ways I Make Myself Go To The Gym

toptentuesday Top Ten Ways I Make Myself Go To The Gym
This weekend, I told my sister I wanted to do “some kind of fast”.  Like the kind where you eat kale and cabbage smoothies.  She talked me out of it, thankfully.  Those smoothies look like when my dog barfs on the carpet.

No, it’s better just to cut out crappy, processed foods and exercise.  None of which is easy, and I am excellent at finding excuses not to work out so I thought I would share with you the Top Ten Ways I Make Myself Go To The Gym.

exercise Top Ten Ways I Make Myself Go To The Gym

  1. My gym offers two hours of childcare while you work out.  I take the full time, but that should in no way indicate that I am working out for two hours.  Nope.  I take a nice, long shower.  With no interruptions.
  2. I also hang out in the sauna, steam room, or whirl pool for a while after my workout.  It’s sooooo relaxing.
  3. I buy Aveda shampoo and conditioner, but only use it at the gym after a workout.  It’s like Suave and a shower at home is a punishment for being lazy.
  4. I spend money on workout clothes {or ask for them as gifts}.  I won’t go if I feel like I look like a slob.
  5. I floss my teeth while Aveda conditioner is working. So efficient and healthy, I am smug when I get out of the shower. Until I walk past the mirror.
  6. I tried to go it alone, but now I take my family. I realized it’s the only way it’s gong to work. Plus, what if I get all fit and sexy and my husband feels intimidated? Not good. So I make him go too.
  7. When I get dressed in the morning, I put my workout clothes on.  Yes, I am that lazy.  Even having to change when I get to the gym seems like a barrier.
  8. If I am really having a hard time making myself go, I promise myself that I will buy a ridiculously overpriced coffee when I’m done.
  9. I took a class to learn how to make the most of my workout, and also learned that I had been taking it WAY too easy on myself.
  10. I watch “The Baby Story” while I’m there.  Yeah, I’m sweating and huffing – but at least I’m not doing that.

How do YOU make yourself go to the gym?

Recipe Roundtable {Cranberry Bliss Bars}

Recipe Roundtable23 Recipe Roundtable {Cranberry Bliss Bars}The good people at Oh Nuts asked if I would like to choose a few items from their catalog to use in my holiday baking.  Yes, please! After deliberating for far too long, I decided upon White Chocolate Chips and Cranberries.  It was a task to keep my husband from eating all of the white chocolate before I even started, but now he admits it is better to have waited. I made Cranberry Bliss Bars, using the recipe from Food.com.

bliss 300x168 Recipe Roundtable {Cranberry Bliss Bars}

Cranberry Bliss Bars

  • 1 cup butter (2 sticks, very soft)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons orange extract or 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3/4 cup dried cranberries
  • 3/4 cup white chocolate chips {I used grated white chocolate bars!}

FROSTING

  • 3 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 3 cups confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract (or vanilla)

TOPPING

  • 1/3 cup dried cranberries, chopped
  • 1 -2 tablespoon grated orange rind
  • 1/3 cup white chocolate chips {or grated white chocolate}

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees (325 for a glass or dark pan). Prepare a 10×15 by lining it with parchment paper or use a non-stick spray.

With an electric mixer, beat together softened butter and sugars 3-5 minutes until light; gently blend in eggs and orange extract (don’t overbeat eggs). Add the flour, baking powder, and ginger and beat briefly. Add the cranberries and chips, stirring just until incorporated.

Spread thick batter in prepared 10×15 pan. Bake 350 for 20-24 minutes until light brown AT EDGES and a skewer tests clean. Don’t overbake or your bars will be dry. Let it cool completely. NOTE: If you use a 9×13 pan, the bars will be thicker and will take 26-28 minutes.

Blend cream cheese and butter until fluffy. Add orange extract and confectioner’s sugar and beat until frosting is fluffy and spreadable (adding 1 t. milk if needed). Spread evenly over COOLED bars.

Use a zester to remove rind from an orange; sprinkle zest over frosted bars. Chop 1/3 cup cranberries coarsely; sprinkle over frosted bars.

DRIZZLE: Mix white chocolate and 2 tsp. canola oil in a glass measuring cup. Microwave 1 minute; stir until melted. Use a fork or whisk to drizzle the white chocolate diagonally across the bars. {I didn’t do this.  I just sprinkled the grated chocolate on the top.}

Allow one hour for the white chocolate to set before cutting.

Recipe Roundtable is co-hosted by BigBinder and Sarah’s Deals. Each blog will host it’s own recipe, but share a common linky. The co-hostesses links will appear at the top of the list and you are welcome to join in. Please link to your ACTUAL POST and not just your home page so people can find it easier. Also please put the recipe title in parentheses to help out the other readers. Old recipe posts are fine. While we appreciate a link back or the addition of the button above, it is NOT required. Thank you for participating!

I received a product sample from Oh! Nuts.  All opinions are my own.
