Recipe Roundtable – Spooky Dinner
We had our wonderful Spooky Dinner this weekend, so this isn’t really a recipe {because everything is pretty self explanatory…} but it’s a really fun menu for Halloween!
PLATE OF BONES
JACK O’ LANTERN PIZZAS {extra scary, because the mouths fell off while they were baking}
MUMMY PIZZAS
MUMMY DOGS DIPPED IN BLOOD {note the Mummy Juice!}
EYEBALLS {carrots with cream cheese and olives}

We also had Halloween Cupcakes of course! It’s such a fun tradition for all of us! Do you have any Halloween recipes? Link it up! This weekly feature is co-hosted by BigBinder and Sarah’s Deals. Each blog will host it’s own recipe, but share a common linky. The co-hostesses links will appear at the top of the list and you are welcome to join in. Please link to your ACTUAL POST and not just your home page so people can find it easier. Also please put the recipe title in parentheses to help out the other readers. Old recipe posts are fine. While we appreciate a link back or the addition of the button above, it is NOT required. Thank you for participating!

Dairy Discovery Harvest Days
We’ve gone to several ‘agritourism’ places this year, and honestly each one was a disappointment. While the opportunity to ride in a monster truck and ride a zipline might be good business; we actually went to pick apples.
I love Dairy Discovery because they keep it real. They’re goal is to educate, and they do it in a fun and interesting way. Their Harvest Days event is Saturday, October 29 from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, rain or shine.
During Harvest Days, you can:
- bottle feed calves
- watch cows being milked
- take a hayride
- listen to Bluegrass music, play in a corn box, have a snack, and do a corn maze
It’s $8 per person, and if you buy four admissions you get one free.

Halloween Cupcakes
We have successfully started a tradition! The kids are excited to repeat the smashing success of “Spooky A.P.’s” restaurant. However, they have expanded their operations to include “Maybelle’s Desserts”. On the menu for the main course is:
- Mummy Dogs Dipped In Blood
- Mini Mummy Pizzas
- Mini Jack O Lantern Pizzas
- Plate of Bones
- Eyeballs
- Mummy Juice
Mummies are over represented this year, due the relatively low level of skill it takes to ‘wrap’ something. The actual dinner is tomorrow, but tonight we got a jump on the dessert: Skeleton Cupcakes.
This is what they are supposed to look like:
This is what they actually look like:
This is real life, folks. It looks more like a turtle was trying to climb over a cupcake, got stuck, and died there, but since chocolate frosting is involved I am going to go out on a limb and guess no one will complain. It’s just a frosted cupcake, with a white chocolate covered pretzel and some arms, legs, and a head freehand-ed on with frosting {which we ran out of after about 4 cupcakes. Note to self: buy a bigger tube next time}.

Keeping Track of Children’s Medical Records
When the kids were babies, I had to drag those stupid green cards around (not the ones from the INS; the ones from the Health Department) with me to keep track of their vaccinations. Now immunizations records for the state are all kept in the MCIR {which I thought stood for the Michigan Child Immunization Record, but it stands for the Michigan Care Improvement Registry}. Every state has a version of this registry.
If you need a copy of your child’s record you can request a copy from the MCIR or the Kent County Health Department. The MCIR is free but it takes a few weeks, and sometimes the Health Department charges a few bucks but they give it to you fairly quickly. I think it depends entirely on the mood of the person behind the counter, so be extra nice and see what happens.
So why would you need a copy?
The debate about vaccines causing Autism has had an influence on parents taking a more active role in immunization decisions. I used the MCIR when A.P. was a baby to show, for example, that he had already received one of the vaccines a pediatrician was trying to give him with a ‘combo shot’. Even if you are a parent who immunizes their children; you still don’t want them to have more than they need! Stay informed about what the current guidelines are. Remember that the schedules are recommended. The vaccines can be spread out, or not administered at all. Even if you are following the recommended schedule, get an updated copy before each appointment because the current vaccination schedule can change from one appointment to the next.
I have a file for each kid with all of their ‘shot records’ and the current green physical form (not to be confused with the obsolete green card). When they started school, I innocently popped by the pediatrician’s office and asked them to fill out the green physical form. They wanted fifteen dollars to fill out a form that 1) is inevitably illegible and 2) no one looks at. I found out that while it’s true the school needs a new green form every year – they are also good for a year.
For example, if your child’s green physical form was filled out in November, the school doesn’t need a new one until the following November. They just ask for it when school starts because the secretaries like sit behind their little counters and snicker at parents who are madly filling out forms, writing checks, and trying to find all of the stuff on the Recommended Supply List.
When your kids have their annual physical, have the doctor fill out a physical form at that time. They won’t charge you if it’s done during an appointment. Then make a copy, and hand it to the school secretary next time you’re in. Keeping track of my kids’ medical records isn’t fun, but being informed about them Works For Me!
Children’s Museum Harvest Party October 27
Every Thursday, the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum lowers admission to $1.50 per person. This week is a GREAT time to take advantage of it because they are having a Harvest Party! It’s from 5:30 to 7:30, and kids are welcome to come dressed in their costumes. There will be a few treats, face panting, and fall activities.

First Saturdays at Calvin – Discover The Wild Turkey
We cannot get enough of the First Saturday programs at the Calvin EcoPreserve! The next one is November 5 from 10:00 to 11:30 am and as always, it is free.
This is what they say about it:
Do you have questions about the Wild Turkey? Come to this family oriented program to learn more! Participate in activities and stories designed to help you and your family understand more about turkeys. One lucky volunteer will be transformed into a wild turkey as we work together to learn the various parts of this animal! And children and adults alike will have fun pretending to be wild turkeys during our survival game. A fun turkey craft will also be available for families to create at the end of the program
Pick me! Pick me! I would be an awesome turkey. I just know it.
Will we see you there?!
