Learning about #ToysForTotsLiteracy at The UPS Store

Do you remember when we sent “Leaf” place mats to our friends who moved to Texas? Apparently, it worked!  The prospect of spending another year away from Grand Rapids was unbearable to them.  They are moving back this month, and we are can’t wait to give them big hugs when they get home!

We shipped the place mats at The UPS Store and I have some good news from that front, too.  I’m sure you are familiar with Toys For Tots, but there is another program you might not know about.  The UPS Store has teamed up with the Marine Toys For Tots Foundation to promote  The Toys For Tots Literacy Program; which provides books to children in poverty – year round.  Since 2008, more than $1.6 million has been donated to help with this initiative.

As an early childhood advocate, I love to talk about the importance of language acquisition, and how early experiences affect the brain architecture which lays the foundation for learning throughout life.  Rather than rambling on about synapses and neurons, I’ll show you a great little party Sarah’s Deals and I had to celebrate this program.

First, Maybelle designed the invitations.

Then we went to The UPS Store to make copies. While we were there, the kids checked out the Post Office Boxes, shipping boxes, giant packages of packing peanuts, and looked longingly at the huge rolls of bubble wrap.

Making copies is easy! Especially when the owner helps you.

We stuck the invitations in everyone’s back pack at school.

Then it was time to rock and roll.

And there ain’t no party like party at The UPS Store.

We had some fine spring picks to read.

Officer Erin from the Kentwood Police Department was our Guest Reader!

This was a party, of course. With a free book for every single one of our restless party-goers. They tore into the snacks before we could get them displayed in an attractive, party-like fashion.

A.P. treated some kids to another story.

Then, my kids made their own donation to the Toys For Tots Literacy Program.  It was a really nice way to end this great little gathering!

This project has been compensated as part of a social shopper insights study for Collective Bias #ToyforTotsLiteracy. All opinions are my own.

Recipe Roundtable – Easy, Tasty (Mini!) Bean Dip

In a few days, it will all make sense.  You’ll understand why I was making mini bean dips for dinner.  Don’t you just love a good mystery? Me too.  This isn’t one. For now, just trust me that this is easy and yummy!

All you’ll need is:

Mix the beans and Cooking Creme together.  Spread 1/4 of the mixture on each of four plates, leaving space at the edge of the plate.

The wine has absolutely nothing to do with this recipe.

Around the edge of the bean mixture, place tomatoes as a border.  In the center of the bean mixture, sprinkle chopped olives.

It doesn't have to be pretty. Cheese covers a multitude of sloppiness.

Sprinkle shredded cheese over the entire thing.

Min Bean Dip

Around the edge, place tortilla chips as a border.

Que facil! Que bonita! Que delicioso! Que am I saying?

Do you have an easy appetizer? Share it with us!  Recipe Roundtable is a weekly feature is co-hosted by Big Binder and Sarah’s Deals. Each blog will host it’s own recipe, but share a common linky. The co-hostesses links will appear at the top of the list and you are welcome to join in. Please link to your ACTUAL POST and not just your home page so people can find it easier. Also please put the recipe title in parentheses to help out the other readers. Old recipe posts are fine. While we appreciate a link back or the addition of the button above, it is NOT required. Free Bike Helmets for Kids In Grand Rapids

So, let’s say you bust those bikes out of the garage and decide to sign your kids up for some fun bike races.  But the helmet; the one that fit perfectly fine last fall, is too small.  Or maybe it’s cracked, or needs to be replaced because “one crash and it’s trash”.

I know you have already signed up and promised that your child would “Put A Lid On Itevery time they ride in exchange for free hockey tickets (you have signed up; haven’t you?!).

And I know you wouldn’t lie to Griff.
P9260079

Does your child need a bike helmet? I have a solution! Safe Kids and the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital are giving away free bike helmets to those who need them.  HUGE thanks to the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Nurse Practitioners and the Grand Rapids Griffins for donating helmets!  They will be distributed on these dates:

Things To Do – Memorial Day Weekend

I signed up to drive in too many field trips.  Which seems like a horrible thing to say considering the entire reason we bought our minivan was so I could drive for field trips – so I wouldn’t call it complaining, as much as -

Who am I kidding.  I am complaining.  Somehow the fact that our school schedules 95% of the field trips in the last three weeks of school escaped me in September when I was full of optimism and put my name on every single list that said, “Drivers Needed”.  It wouldn’t be a problem but, um, have you SEEN the gas prices? Of course you have.  I am totally counting field trips in the ‘entertainment’ category for home-budgeting purposes; which means:

We need some frugal fun for the next few weeks!

You too? Well, make sure you keep checking the Event Calendar. It has been updated with some GREAT things, including a few Memorial Day goodies.  My favorite is the discounted rate on the Coopersville Marne Railroad Troops Train and of course, there are parades! They’ll be happening in:

  • Grand Rapids
  • Rockford
  • Walker
  • Caledonia
  • Grandville

I also added an entire guide to Free Outdoor Music Concerts which will change as details are added, and updated the Whitecaps Deals with a way to get four free tickets! Hurry though, the offer is only good for one week.

I also helped Kitchen Stewardship with a “Grand Rapids Staycation” post she did earlier this week – check it out for some great, frugal, “Hallelujah I have gas money!” ideas.

Whitecaps Deals

A year ago, I wrote about going to my very first blog conference! I was so excited and nervous. I didn’t know what to bring, or wear, or do, or say… but it was all fine.

One year later, the whole blogging game has changed for me.  I have my own domain, am a proud member of West Michigan Bloggers, and a very active member of Collective Bias.  I understand much better the power of social media in advocacy, and came to terms with the fact that I am not a ‘normal’ blogger because my community are the people that live near me rather than my online friends (although I have to say… there are some charming, wonderful people out there that are winning  me over!)

In that post, I also wrote about Whitecaps Baseball, and the deals on tickets.  There aren’t a ton that are available to everyone, for example some are for senior citizens, some are for members of a certain bank, or insurance company.  So if you are lucky like that, take advantage of it!

Remember to take cash for the parking lot, and be sure to eat something ridiculous while you’re there.  It’s as American as… giant hamburgers.

Oh, and Gleek Retreat 2011? I’m leaving in just a few hours :)

I Have A Fierce Heart

Yesterday, I went with the Great Start Parent Coalition to the Star Power Rally.  It’s in Lansing, and we took a bus.  As you know, we’ve gone to this for several years. My kids look forward to it, because they are enthusiastic about speaking with our lawmakers and advocating for early childhood programs.

HA!

They like it because they get to see their buddies, and there are donuts on the bus.

This year was a little different.  First, we formed a parade that marched from Lugnuts Stadium (waving Whitecaps banners.  Hee hee!) down to the steps of the State Capitol.  We met with our new State Representative, Brandon Dillon.  We talked to our new Senator, Dave Hildenbrand.  And also, I was chosen out of 9000 people to receive the “Fierce Heart award for Outstanding Advocacy”.

I got a call last week telling me I had won – which was slightly overwhelming because I didn’t even know I had been nominated.  Some of the reasons you guys would know about – like helping with the Family Fun Day or posting diaper deals to encourage folks to donate to the Diaper Drive.  Some of the reasons you won’t, and I am going to keep it that way. If I can use Big Binder to help advocate I won’t hesitate.  But I won’t use it as a way to showcase behind the scenes, get your hands dirty volunteer work I do for the youngest members of our community because I don’t want to exploit anything for personal gain.  I don’t like it when other people do it; and also, I think it irritates God.

I hesitated to even write this post but had enough encouragement that I decided to do it.  I am so thankful for anyone who has taken action because of something I have written about.  YOU share this with me.  I am proud that someone from Grand Rapids was chosen for this award.  It was my pleasure to represent all of us yesterday.

Humbled does not adequately describe it.  Grateful that my children and husband could be with me yesterday at the Capitol is an understatement.  Blown away that both my State Rep and Senator know me personally and were excited for me doesn’t begin to explain it.  Just this once; I am at a loss for words so I will let you read the press release:  Kent County parent wins statewide Fierce Heart award.

On the Capitol steps. The bright yellow t-shirt was mandatory.

Camp Manitou-Lin – We’re In!

Remember when I told you that Camp Manitou-Lin had an open house on Sunday? I hadn’t ever visited before, and I wanted to check it out.  A.P. and I headed down and despite the rain, quite a few people were there.

I was all ready for “the “sign here” pitch.  I figured a camp open house would consist of people trying to sell camp sessions directly to kids with their parents standing right there;  then leaving us to deal with the fallout if we have to say no.  I can’t blame parents that fork over cash just to get their kid to stop crying.  It’s horrible.

There was no pitch.

It was truly an open house.  It was all about checking out the camp.  And check out the camp, we did.

Of course A.P. was in love with every activity.  I met the actual people who would be his counselors if he goes to camp.  I watched them interact with him, and with other kids.  They were fun, and firm, and amazing.

A.P. is ready for camp.  The question was whether or not I am ready for camp.

On his first day of 3 year old preschool, he waved goodbye to me and marched into the classroom.  So much to explore

I cried – but why? Did I want him to miss me? To think he can’t do without me for a few hours? No, of course not.  It’s because he was going to have experiences that I wasn’t going to be there for.  I wanted to see him learn, and sit in circle time, and sing little 3 year old preschool songs.  I didn’t want to miss it.

I knew he would be fine.  I knew his teachers cared about him.  I knew it was the very first step in a long journey of watching him wave goodbye and march off to experience things I wouldn’t see.

I did not sign up at the Camp Manitou-Lin open house.  It was available, but no one pushed me at all, which I appreciated.  My husband and I had a chance to talk it over, and then decided it was a go.

A.P. is thrilled.

Maybelle did not go with us to the open house, but A.P. told her about:

  1. The camp store.
  2. The crafts.
  3. The horseback riding.

He had her at camp store.

Maybelle does NOT want to sleep there (which is good, because she’s 5 and she can’t anyway) but wants to go during the day and come home and sleep in her own bed at night.

I have met the counselors.  I trust the counselors.  I know it is a good camp.  I know A.P. will wave good bye, and march into Camp Manitou-Lin, and have experiences I can’t see. I know his sister will follow him, and have an incredible time at day camp, and be glad to come home at night.

And it’s all OK.

Camp Manitou-Lin is an advertiser on Big Binder.  All opinions, and separation issues with my firstborn, are my own.

Zipments

We’ve talked about some ways to make extra money here before.  I know many of you are using Swagbucks, we’ve talked about MyPoints, we’ve talked about doing baby food testing, we’ve talked about being paid to write; we’ve even talked about donating plasma (or actually, NOT donating plasma).

The next great way to make some extra cash is a new company called Zipments.

It’s a courier service, which makes me feel so – big city. Like subways. And street vendors.

People who need something moved (or, ‘Zipped’ I should say) post a job with information about what they need moved, and the time frame they are looking for.

People who want to make some extra money look at the jobs they have posted, and see if they are headed that way. They bid on the price, and then Zipments charges 10% to the shipper so it’s a good deal for everyone.

I am going to Holland this weekend for a blogging conference called Gleek Retreat, and I will definitely check and see if anyone has a Zipment available! I hope it’s blueprints. That would just be cool.

You do need a PayPal address and a mobile phone. That way they can call you when a bid has been accepted, and pay you when you’re done – within 24 hours!

You can sign up and learn more from the Zipments website, and there is a ton of information on their blog, including how to get notifications via text!

Make sure you follow them on Facebook for job announcements too! You can also follow on Twitter for jobs.

So what do you think? Are you going to check it out?

A stipend was provided to me for writing this post.  All opinions are my own.

Zhu Zhu Wedding

Remember when we did Zhu Zhu Boo At The Zoo? My kids have been Zhu Zhu pet fanatics ever since! Maybelle was thrilled to have a party and invite some friends over for – get this – a Royal Zhu Wedding.

And while Kate and William had a nice gig – they had nothin’ on the Zhu Zhu pets.  There was a carriage, a castle, and a ballroom.

A.P. put together the set for Maybelle since he would be at school during the party.  He also got his Kung Zhus out to be ‘guards’ and attached a fitness center to the castle for the guards to train.

Here is a video of the ceremony, and the reception.  And they all lived happily ever after.

I received a Zhu-universe Royal Bridal kit.  All opinions are my own.
