Lent starts Wednesday. That means a lot of things; but one of them is that we don’t eat meat on Friday for the next 40 days. It seems easy enough, but several years ago a priest pointed out to me that going to Red Lobster and having the Sea Food Platter was probably not the kind of sacrifice we should be working towards. I have been somewhat guilt stricken about enjoying Friday Lenten meals ever since. I suspect sometimes that even Fish Frys might be a little bit too fun.
So what do we do? Pretty much have Tuna Noodle Casserole for 6 weeks in a row. Now THAT’S some suffering right there. When it’s over my family won’t get within a mile of an egg noodle until sometime around late July.
But the thing is, I like shrimp. I like to eat it, and serve it, and it’s always on sale during Lent.
So the very clever Shrimp Council came up with a plan.
In addition to Fish Fridays, have Shrimp Sunday. I love it!
There are some great recipes on the “Eat Shrimp” website, but I like a really simple one.
Steamed Shrimp
- 1 pound raw shrimp
- 2 tbsp. Old Bay Seasoning
- 1 lemon, cut into quarters
- 1 cup water
Mix Old Bay Seasoning and water in a saucepan. Place lemon quarters in the pan, and bring to a boil. Rinse the shrimp, and place inside a covered steamer basket. Carefully set a steamer in the pan so the lemon quarters elevate it. Steam for 5 minutes or until pink.
The Shrimp Council would like to give FIVE of you a shrimp basting brush!
To enter, just fill out the form below. I’ll choose the winners by Random.org on “Fish Friday”. Good luck!

This weekly feature is co-hosted by http://www.thebigbinder.com/ and http://www.sarahsdeals.net/. Each blog will host it’s own recipe, but share a common linky. The co-hostesses links will appear at the top of the list and you are welcome to join in.
Please link to your ACTUAL POST and not just your home page so people can find it easier. Also please put the recipe title in parentheses to help out the other readers. Old recipe posts are fine. Shrimp Sundays is a great idea! Too bad my son doesn’t like shrimp, so on the days I serve shrimp I give him something else.

You know what, my son LOVES shrimp – but my daughter will not touch it! She just dips bread in the garlic butter and is happy
