You know I am all about getting kids involved in community events. AND about keeping kids active. So when these two things meet, I get so excited I become a media sponsor. The Grand Rapids Marathon is a huge event for our city, and there is a kids component that I just love. Not only is there a portion of the race the kids can take part in, it keeps them active before that for two months.
Here’s how: The race date is October 16 at 1:30 PM. It takes place at the downtown YMCA. But before that, register your kids for the event. Then, download this log book. They’ll need it to keep track of the distance they cover each week, which is at least one mile three times a week with a friend or family member.
They can start training now, and logging their miles. The log goes through mile 25. As the children reach milestones on their log (5, 13, and 20 miles), they are invited to go to any of the Gazelle Sports locations to receive a prize!
By Race Weekend, the children will have covered nearly a marathon distance. They’ll run or walk the last 1.2 miles starting at the very same Starting Line as the “big kids” do for the Marathon! On the day of the event, pre-registered runners will receive:
- An official race bib.
- Finishers receive a Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Kids Marathon medal and certificate.
- A Really Cool T Shirt.
- Post-race refreshments.
Please help spread the word about this great event. It is free. It is active. It is awesome!!

It is a very cool thing and I’m SO excited for both of my kids to participate in it this year. 7 & 6 seem like the perfect age to accomplish this big feat for little feet!!! Hope to see you and yours there☺
