Yesterday we took advantage of the free admission on Tuesdays from1-5 PM at the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The nice front desk ladies gave us a little activity sheet to work on while we were there and we only set off one alarm, so I’m going to go ahead and call that a success.
It’s hard to be quiet. It’s hard not to touch the pretty paintings and sculptures. We stayed in the actual museum for about 45 minutes; then toured the lounge and gift shop for approximately the same amount of time. Like allergy shots; I deliberately give my kids small doses of this artsy stuff to build up their tolerance. This plan also makes it a super-frugal activity, because then I can throw a few quarters in the 2 hour meters right by the Museum and not pay the equivalent of what I saved in admission by parking in a lot.
It’s free every Tuesday, but once school starts it’s hard to take advantage of. There are lots of fun, frugal things happening next week. Make a plan and enjoy it while you can!
Don’t forget to check BigBinder’s Active Kids Page for races and events kids can participate in – this Saturday is the Millenium Triathalon and there is a kids race as well. It’s $25 which is more than most events I tell you about; but if your kid is really into this kind of thing, it’s worth it. (Or, if you just want to watch people swim, bike, and run, that’s fine too…) Also, some of the Summer Reading Programs wrap up this week too, so get those logs turned in!
Here are my top three things not to miss:
- Coopersville Summerfest. This runs from August 7-14, so look at the schedule and decide which of these awesome activites your kids will love the most: tractor show, kids’ triathalon, downhill derby, waterball, teddy bear parade, special-price train rides, tractor pulls… SO MUCH! And a lot of it is free.
- August in Ada Children’s Fair. This is Friday, August 6 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. It includes games, crafts, rides, fun, food and entertainment; and it’s sponsored by local businesses. A little bird told me Griff will be there too!
- The Kent County Youth Fair runs from August 9-14. Combined with a special deal from Grand Rapids Moms Like Me, kids can read four books and get free rides at the fair.
There is so much more though! Check out the “What’s Happening in Grand Rapids August 4-10” page for all the details!
