Family Movie Night

TILTTomorrow night is family movie night. It’s one of those things that sounds corny, but it fits beautifully with my philosophy of happiness which is this:

Have little things to look forward to.

And even if that still sounds corny, let me assure you that it works. My kids are crazy about Family Movie Night, and I am not using the word ‘crazy’ lightly. Last week, they started lobbying us on Wednesday to ‘vote’ for their movie choice.

Note to self:  Lay off the political stuff; they’re just kids.

Family Movie Night hits a snag when the library doesn’t have anything we haven’t seen or as is sometimes the case with kids’ movies; scratched DVDs. Or when we wait until Friday night at 6:30 to try and find something in the Redbox and there is nothing left. Off to Blockbuster we go, except that all of the Blockbusters within close range have closed up shop.

My husband and I realized that there had to be a better way. Heading to Redbox or the library to shell out a buck or less; fine.  Heading to the next town to shell out $6; not fine. Always ones to walk that fine line between efficiency and laziness, we decided to give “one of those online” deals a shot. I tried to talk to the Blockbuster Lady about their online program, but she apparently got a commission on the Total Rewards program because she would not stop jabbering about it even after I said I really wanted to try Blockbuster Online instead.  Three times.

Therefore, Blockbuster lost on the grounds of being too annoying. We checked out Netflix with their free trial deal.  It’s working like a charm.  It has the added bonus of letting us set up a queue (which in British, means “line-up”). We show the kids our queue and they take turns choosing the next flick. No campaigning necessary AND we never, ever end up watching Dora’s Christmas Babies because it’s not in the queue.  It’s all about helping kids make good choices, folks.

So that’s what I love – efficiency/laziness, free trials, and no Christmas Babies. For more Things I Love Thursday, go see the Diaper Diaries.

Top Ten Things To Do Before You Go On Vacation With Your Pet(and a contest!)

So I’ve learned a thing or two (or ten) from our road trip with two kids, a dog, and a husband. Let me share them with you.

1. Make sure everyone is well rested and in a goodmood  for the trip. Otherwise, it’s going to be a loooong ride. If that is not possible, make sure you have a few new movies, and snacks.

2.  Put a hold on your mail. You can do it all online, and enter the stop and start dates.  What you don’t want to do is accidentally click the wrong return date. What happens there is that you don’t get your mail for a week after you get home and then it takes two hours just to sort out the junk. Not that I would do something like that, I’m just saying, someone might.

3.  Let your husband take his stupid bike, even if he is only going to actually ride it for 45 minutes. Total.

4.  Understand, and help your husband to understand, that pets and children have smaller bladders and will need to take more breaks than when he did his last road trip, which was approximately 15 years ago and he drove from Alabama to California in a day and a half.

5.  Keep your pet on a leash, even when they are in a house of a relative that has a 8 pound, geriatric poodle named “Cubby Bear”.  Because when you dog mistakes Cubby Bear for a snack, you can quickly pull her off of him. It’s the same feeling that you get when your kid bites someone in playgroup. Awful.

6.  Get in contact with the convention and tourism bureau before you go and ask where the pet friendly parks, etc. are.

7.  If you need help finding a pet friendly accommodations or attractions, check out Bring Fido.

8.  Get an inexpensive, engraved tag to add to your pet’s collar with your cell phone on it in case they get lost while you’re traveling. Our Wal-Mart has engraving kiosks, and it’s about $5.

9.  Check out Paws To Click and take a pledge to keep your pet safe while traveling.

10. Get a Bergan pet harness. What? You don’t have one? Let me fix that. I have one BIG harnesses that fits dogs from 80-150 pounds and would love to help protect a road-trippin’ pooch! To win, just go over to the Bergan website and leave a comment letting me know what other product you would buy for your pet.  I’ll draw a random winner on Saturday, so be sure to leave your email address.

For more Top Ten Tuesday, go see OhAmanda.

I received the Bergan harness and compensation from Collective Bias. This awesome research and all opinions are my own. For more about traveling with pets, check out HolidayRoads.

Random Recipe – Pesto

We went to the Fulton Street Farmer’s Market today and I had forgotten to stop by the bank. Most of the vendors only take cash, but there is a solution. You can buy tokens that look like wooden poker chips and charge it on your debit card. They don’t expire, so you can keep them for your next trip if you buy too many.

The solution causes its own problem though. It’s really easy to forget it’s actual money and spend all your chips. Not that I would do that, of course, but I’m just warning those of you that go weak around produce and baked goods. Beautiful, fresh produce from friendly farmers and tasty bilays, pizza dough and focaccia…

OK I spent all my tokens.

I’ll admit that, but I won’t admit how many tokens I bought.  Let’s just say there will be no shortage of kale in my household. No siree.

I came away with an abundance of basil, which desite finding it intoxicating, I am having a hard time finding a way to stash it in every recipe I make this week. I have a lot of basil

Which leads me to pesto.  I used this recipe, but didn’t use the butter or salt. And because I am mildly obsessed with Whrrl right now, I have taken a picture of every step and make a little pesto tutorial. Enjoy!

More check-ins at my kitchen

Saturday Stumbles

itscome2this.com
The oil is landing on more coasts. Here are two posts that cut right through the news, and the blame, and the dollars and get right down to what that means. I’m afraid we’re going to stop talking about this kind of damage from the spill – the kind that can’t be fixed.

New to camping? Try it for $20!

Have you camped with kids? I was a little scared to try, but we did it last summer.  Remember last summer? It rained. The whole time. And it was freezing cold. So that was awesome. Not. Our brand new Fancy Brand tent leaked, so our kids were wet AND freezing. Of course we had our dog, who added an interesting perspective. And by perspective, I mean aroma. We gave up after one night.

So now we don’t even have a tent. I found this program from The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Gander Mountain (which, by the way, I cannot say with out immediately shouting HUNT CAMP FISH afterwords) that I’m pretty excited about. Has anyone tried it? It looks like you can kind of  ‘test drive’ camping and see if it is for you.

The First Time Campers Program provides:

  •  Two Nights of Camping
  • Two daily motor vehicle permits
  • Gear provided by Gander Mountain (HUNT CAMP FISH!) including a 4-person tent, a tarp, 2 camp chairs, a flashlight, a lantern, a camp stove, 4 hot dog /marshmallow cookers, and 2 fishing poles.
  • Hands-on instruction on setting up camp and outdoor living from Michigan’s most experienced campers.

You don’t get to keep the stuff, but still; that’s awesome! If you want to give it a try, contact the park where you want to stay, and ask to enroll in the First Time Camper program. Cabins are available for an extra $15 at some parks. That might not be a bad idea… Check the DNR website for the parks that have this program.

Or, if you just want to go for the day and sleep in your own bed at night, AND you are a card carying member of the Grand Rapids Public Library, don’t forget card-holders can check out a day pass to MI State Parks and save the entry fee.  There are some fun “State Parks Explorer” programs that the kids might enjoy, and you can scoot home before the mosquitos come out.

If you’d just like to watch someone else camp from the comfort of your laptop, you can check out WeeShare’s “Celebrate Camping” event, where there will be prizes and reviews of camping gear.  No Deep Woods Off necessary.

Raising West Michigan

In my time away (it was only five days, but I think fast) I thought a lot about where I’m taking Big Binder. Or as is usually the case, where it is taking me. I have been tossing around a few ideas and I finally found one I like.

I’m going to help raise West Michigan.

Not just in the sense of raising its children to be active both physically and in their community, but in raising up all of us. Our health, mental and physical. Our economy. Our image.

It’s a big job for one person, but many hands make light work. And many blogs make lifting a region easy. If not easy, than at least very interesting.

I am going to start featuring other West Michigan bloggers, whether they like it or not. Just kidding. There are fascinating people out there right in our backyards, so to speak. Most of them don’t maintain a regional focus, like I do, but some do.

I thought I’d start at the very beginning – literally. Donielle from Naturally Knocked Up explores different ways to get your body ready for child-bearing, and also deals with infertility and some natural ways to try and increase odds for conception.  She herself converted to a natural diet and lifestyle. She’s a talented writer, and folks wanting to really focus on this are extremely fortunate that she has created an e-course.  It starts next week on Monday, July 12.

Donielle really wants to share her own story of becoming pregnant through nourishing foods, and help you to have the same success. She has put a tremendous amount of work into this course, and it includes recipes, how-to videos, and so much information it had to be put into a class format to avoid being overwhelming.  I am thrilled to be an affiliate for this course, and hope that you put some serious consideration into it.

According to Donielle, this course is best for:

  • Couples who want to learn natural alternatives to increase the odds of conception.
  • Fertile Myrtles looking to best prepare their bodies before trying to conceive.
  • Engaged or newly married couples who want to learn how what you do now affects your fertility later.
  • People who think they’re too old to become pregnant and carry to term.
  • People who are looking at conventional infertility treatments (IUI/IVF) and want to increase their chances of success.  Preparing your body takes a holistic approach that can complement modern medicine.

The course is $96, and goes for 12 weeks.  That is $8 a week for very valuable information.  Each week, you’ll download new materials and read the lessons on your own schedule. Here is an overview of each week:

Week 1. Cleansing Your Body

Week 2. Natural Living – such as cleaners and beauty products

Week 3. Exercise

Week 4. Fertility Awareness

Week 5. Real Nutrition

Week 6. Super Foods for Fertility

Week 7. What Not to Eat

Week 8. Herbs and Fertility

Week 9. Alternative Treatments for Infertility

Week 10. Stress

Week 11. Tips for Increased Fertility

Week 12. Where to Start

In my opinion, the real value of an e-course instead of a book is the online forum you can participate in.  You’ll have access to the materials as well as the forum forever – not just the 12 weeks during the course. So if you have to put the course on hold and finish up at a later time, that is completely fine.

Now, $96 is a lot of money. You can also make 3 payments of $40 if you’d like, and there is a money-back guarantee until July 18, so you can complete one chapter and get a refund if it isn’t the right fit for you.

Are you ready to get Naturally Knocked Up?

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Did everyone have a good Fourth of July? I did! My family and I went to Maryland to visit my in-laws.  It was an awesome time – and you’ll hear (much!) more about it in the next few days. As it turns out, there is not a lot of free WiFi in them thar’ hills, so I was unplugged the whole time.

This ought to keep you busy for the next week. That and, reading my blog. I don’t know if there is a pent up demand, but there is a pent up supply so consider yourself warned :)

July 10 Meijer Cycling Classic (and kids’ bike race)
July 8,9, 10 Lowell Riverwalk Festival.  If you take a picture of yourself with the J&H Duck, you could win a $25 gas card.
July 14-19 Town and Country Days, Sparta
July 15 Monkey See, Monkey Do! Another hat-trick event from Douglas J, John Ball Park Zoo, and the Grand Rapids Children’s Museum.
