I've Found Hidden Treasure!

Since I started “Tasty Tuesday”, I have had several comments from other parents that their kids probably wouldn’t eat anything at the restaurants where A.P., Maybelle and I dine.

Let me be clear; my children are big fans of traditional kid fare too.  I like to eat things that I think are interesting, so Art & Bev’s Bistro  at Grand Rapids Community College was a great find for us.

I don’t think I’ve been in there often when there are other kids (I don’t mean those GRCC whippersnappers) besides mine.  My dear Big Binder readers; this is a place you all need to know about.

It is on right on GRCC’s campus, so it is a very convenient place to get lunch after you’ve been downtown having fun. It is run by GRCC’s award winning Hospitality Department.  You order at the counter and then take you food to a table, but it is ready very quickly because there are tons of people working.

The prices here are great. For $10.00, we got a 10 inch cheese pizza, a five piece chicken tenders meal with fries, a sundried tomato wrap with veggies, feta cheese and pesto, two chocolate milks,  a pop, and two cookies.  Something for everyone, no?

There are salads, sandwiches, soups, hot dogs, pizza and a daily special.  Click here to see what specials they have cooking up this week.

The food quality is remarkable. You will be impressed. I don’t mind my kids eating chicken tenders as long as they are real chicken and not ”processed, mechanically separated chicken products”. There are also bakery goodies like freshly baked bread and cakes.  Art & Bev closes at 1:00; just in time to go home and take naps.

It is in the Applied Technology Center, which is on the corner of Ransom and Fountain.  You park under the building; use the Ramsom Street entrance.  It will say restricted parking; but that is for students. There will be a sign for Art & Bev by the parking ramp ‘arm’.  It will swing open and let you in.  Art & Bev is on the second floor. Make sure you get an exit code from the staff at Art & Bev because that is how you get back out of the parking ramp.

I know you want to go check this out; I can just tell. The folks there are cool and it is a friendly atmosphere.  They want to meet you, too.  So much, in fact, that they donated two $5 gift certificates to encourage you to eat local – and enjoy it!

Just leave a comment below to enter; and good luck!

A Respectable Bird

Ben Franklin

Ben Franklin, as you may have heard, wanted the turkey to be the national symbol rather than the bald eagle, in part on the grounds that the Bald Eagle is a “bird of bad moral character”.

Ben clearly lost that debate, but maybe it’s a good thing. I might feel a little wierd chowing down on the national symbol. With all due respect to the turkey, I have no qualms whatsoever eating it.

Aren’t we fortunate, then, to have the “Michigan Turkey Producers ” right here in our area! This is an interesting group.  They are a co-op of 16 farmers who have joined together to produce the best turkey available.  Their families have been farming turkeys for generations.

While retaining values passed down from one generation to the next to raise the best turkeys, at the same time they have the most modern processing plant in the nation.   They offer several different products, including all natural, organic, antibiotic free turkey.  Who could ask for more?

I love anything that makes it easy to eat well locally. In addition to a long list of locations (below) where you can pick up some Golden Legacy or private label turkey, there will soon be a cash and carry store set up in Grand Rapids. Good news!!

What’s the easiest way to get some yummy turkey? Enter an Eat Local contest on Big Binder, of course! Two lucky people will each win an All Natural Golden Legacy Turkey Breast generously donated from the Michigan Turkey Producers.

Look at the list; where do YOU buy your turkey from? Chances are it is one of these locations! Leave a comment below to enter the contest.

Good luck!

Eat Local Challenge – Pass It On!

You might remember that not only is it contest mania here; I ‘tagged‘ some other bloggers to create a local meal. I am so very excited to let you know that so far, two have taken the challenge!

The Diaper Diaries (or to be more accurate, the husband of the DD) found the makings for an AWESOME meal at Horrocks and included pictures and the recipe on this post.  You have to go and check it out, it looks SOOO good.

Eastowners whipped up some Vegetable Burritos that also sound delicious. Again, I stand impressed that it was the man of the house that did the cooking.  Being vegetarians I was super curious what they would come up with. They did not disappoint; I am sure I could get my very carniverous family to eat these! Head over here to see what they made!

The past week of eating locally has not been as difficult I thought. My family pleasantly suprised me by really liking the salmon in puffed pastry. My kids are not usually fans of fish other than the ‘sticks’ variety so it’s good to know that smoked salmon has made it on the ‘will eat’ list.

The baked potato soup went over REALLY big.  Unfortunately, I was going to cook the whole package of bacon and use half of it for another meal, but my husband couldn’t stop eating it. To be fair, it was really, really good. I was suprised at how different it tasted than the stuff from the grocery store.

The tortilla soup was really good; we had it two nights in a row. The calzone was good too. I thought that we might not be able to taste the difference in the meat since it was swimming in a sea of pepperoni, sauce, and cheese, but it still tasted better than what we’ve had before.   In fact, one of my husband’s co-workers invited himself over to dinner after he saw the leftovers in my husband’s lunch the next day.

I discovered a new coffee, much to my suprise.  Acting on a hot tip from Char, I stopped by Schuil.  Click on that link; listen to the nice jazziness… yeah, it’s like that. I’m not usually a blend girl, but I got half a pound of Cuban anyway.  I also got half a pound of Celebes Kalossi. This is my new favorite.  When the very nice employee let me look at and smell the beans, I immediately said, “I want my house to smell like that”.  She nodded her head, knowingly, and bagged up my beans. This is good stuff. Real good stuff; I will be back for sure.

I will put a few more recipes up this week as I make them.  I also want to challenge anyone reading this to make a ‘local’ meal! It’s fun!

Mommy? Where is Chile?

This morning the kids and I set out at the farmers’ market, each of us with a few dollars in our pockets and a tote bag in our hands.  I had told A.P. to look for carrots, which he found. He did not want to buy them though, because they were “yucky”.  Meaning, they still had dirt and the tops on them and were not cut into ‘baby’ carrots.

I realized I still have a little work to do.

In keeping with our Eat Local Challenge, today our craft project was mapping our food path.  I know, aren’t you jealous? My kids are too young to know I’m a dork, but they will figure it out soon enough.

We are using a map of Michigan given to us by Michael Sak at the Labor Day parade.  My kids have apparently forgiven him for his recent transgressions, but it probably didn’t hurt that that he also gave them a swell American flag to wave, which they quickly learned is a virtual candy magnet.

We took our map and at every meal today, colored in a little dot marking where our food was from.  Anything from outside of Michigan gets tossed into the lake.  We’ll keep this up until the Eat Local Challenge is over.

My kids find the U.P. a little confusing and keep mixing it up with Wisconsin, but truth be told; so do I…

How Do I Do This Blog Thing? Part 2

What is a blog? And where did that word come from?

A blog is really a website.  The difference between a blog and the type of website we are more accustomed to is that a blog is updated frequently, like a diary or a log.  The word blog is a combination of the words “web” and “log”.  It’s a weblog; or a ‘blog’ for short.

One of my first impressions of blogs was that they were ‘messy’.  I hope mine isn’t, but I know they are all somewhat disorienting to look at in the beginning.

So let’s take a look, and see if I can help sort it out a bit. First, the latest post (or log entry) will be on the front ‘page’ when you go to Big Binder.  It will have a title, and the date is is posted.

Off to the right is an option to subscribe by email.  That way, anytime I post something you will get an email of it. The next thing is RSS feed; this is another way to get updates but if you don’t use RSS feeds don’t worry about this one.

Same for Technorati; it’s blog blah blah. Great stuff; but that will be in our upper level blogging classes.  Oh yes; I have big plans for you all :)

Going down the page is the search function.  It’s like Google, but just for Big Binder.

Categories are the way I, well, categorize things.  You can click on any category to see all the posts I have designated to be in that category.

Going down the page further, recent posts are just that; the past few days’ worth of posts. You can click on any of them to go to that post.

Recent comments are the things people have said about specific posts. You can click on the posts to read what they wrote.

Archives are just posts broken down by months.

A blogroll is like a list of my blogging buddies.  You can click on the links if you want to check out their blogs and see what they are all about.

Links I like are local resources I think folks might be interested in.

Blog stats is the total number of views since my blog started.

Is that enough for one day? I think it is.  Time for a break. Enjoy your Saturday.  And if you have questions you can email me at BigBinderBlog@gmail.com

Stehouwer's Sizzlin' Contest

My family loves Stehouwer’s.  And I don’t just mean A.P., Maybelle, Mr. Binder and myself.  My WHOLE family loves a good ‘sizzler’ and I grew up eating them, and I’m sure if you’re from around here you did too.

This is one tasty and easy way to eat locally.  Stehouwer’s is right here, in Grand Rapids! Lucky us!

I’ll admit something though. For as much as I love to cook; it never occurred to me that I could actually use Stehouwer’s in a recipe.  This brings us to the contest for today.

Stehouwer’s has very generously donated an ENTIRE CASE (that is 48 patties!!) of Beef Sizzlers to encourage us to eat locally. You’ll be sizzlin’ for months!!

Take a look at the Stehouwer’s website and browse through the recipes.  If you win, what recipe would you make?

Leave a comment below with your response, and you will be entered to win

Good luck!

So, Um, How Do I Do This Blog Thing?

woman looking confusedOK. Let me start by saying that I didn’t know what a blog was about 4 months ago. I had some friends who were getting interested in ‘blogging’, and I got curious.

Believe me; I understood completely when several people asked me 1) what is a blog and 2) how do I comment on it?

So here you go!

First, if you are reading this in an email you need to click on the post and come to the Big Binder site.  Here is a little interesting thing you might not know; any time there is an underlined word it means there is a ‘clickable’ link.  Meaning; you can click on it and another website will open up.  Here, click on Big Binder.  See?

Now, at the end of the post (you can scroll down) you want to comment on, it will say “Filed under (whatever) ! Comments”.

Click on ‘comments’.  It will kind of refresh the page, and you will have to scroll down to the end again.  This time, there will be three boxes for you to fill in.

First, it will say ‘name’.  You can just use your first name, or use a ‘screen’ name.  This will be visible for the world to see.

Second, you need to put your email address in.  This only comes to me; and is not visible to anyone else.

Third, if you have your own website you can put it here.  If not, you can leave it blank.

Now you can type your comment in the white box.  When you are done, click the ‘submit’ button below the box.

If you are a first time commenter, you will probably get a message that it needs to be approved by the moderator. That is me. What happens is I get an email and can read the comment before it is published.  This is just to prevent spam.  After a few times, it will ‘trust’ you and you won’t get that message.

Now that is all there is to it! If you have any questions, you can email me.  If you need an email address for me and don’t already have one; use BigBinderBlog@Gmail.com.

OK now here is your assignment!  Leave a comment after this post.  Don’t be shy. Tee hee! Feel silly? We all did at first. You’ll get the hang of it.

I think that is enough Big Binder Blog School for today.  Good work, students! Thank you all so much for reading my blog.  Big Binder loves you.
