How Are You Going To Spend It?

Liisa´s ArtworkThe last week of summer that is. Yes, it is here. Now don’t be sad, the weather will stay nice for a while and there is still time to do ‘summer stuff’ before you start picking apples.

You can still have a picnic in the park, take a hike in the woods with the kids and talk about what is changing as summer ends,  or one of my favorite end of summer activities – stock up on cheap school supplies :)

Here are a few activities to keep you busy in the home stretch… have a great week!

Locavore?

Teacher stuffOK class, it’s time for the word of the day. The word is…. locavore. Anyone know what this means? Crazy eater? Nope. Something to do with trains? Try again. Someone who only eats thing from within 100 miles of their home? You got it! (I know; it should be something like centivore but I didn’t really have any say in the matter).

I have been fascinated with this movement. At the same time, my synapses start to overload when I try and figure out what it really means.  Here are just a few of the questions that arise for me:

  • Can I still use spices from outside my radius? I have a close, personal relationship with Penzey’s Vindaloo spice that I am not ready to terminate.
  • If I go out of town, do I eat their local food, or pack some ‘Calder Cuisine’ and bring it with me? To be more direct; if I visit my relatives in Flint, can I get a  Coney Dog?
  • Can I still hold allegiances with other places I was once a local? Or do I have to forsake Vernors and Sanders from my early childhood in Detroit?

Fall is Officially Uncorked

PP06161 ITB 4KG-2 Magenta Yellow LeavesA few days ago, Maybelle found a leaf that had fallen to the ground. And then another, and then in just a few seconds, she had a whole handful. Fall is coming, I thought, the end of summer is near and school will be starting soon.  It’s time to buy new clothes for A.P.; time to try and find his backpack, time to pull the sweaters out of the back of the closet; time to schedule a tour at the vineyard.

We all have our back to school rituals.

The first falling leaf reminds me it’s time to call Fenn Valley and arrange for a tour. OK I lied; I got excited a few weeks ago during our ‘cold’ snap and already called.

Depending on which type of tour you choose, you will either hang around in the winery and sample wine, or you pile into a wagon and sample wine. It’s like a hayride for adults, but with wine instead of apple cider.  Either way, it ends well. It is your business who you go with – I am taking my husband but it is a great trip out with friends or even by yourself.

If you’re interested, call soon before everyone else notices the leaves have started to fall; these tours fill up quickly!

I Choo Choo CHOOSE You

Ralph WinchesterI seriously hope the United States develops a better mass transit system. Yeah it would be economical, efficient, environmentally sound… but that’s not why. If we don’t; A.P. will probably never get a job and he will live at home forever.  A.P. is a train fanatic. The “Thomas the Tank Engine” recall about killed us.

Speaking of Thomas; we are going to ‘Ride the Rails’ soon.  You see, Thomas goes on tour every year. I picture a very fancy tour bus cruising across the country with Thomas inside, bossing everyone around and demanding to talk with his agent.

Miraculously, he can appear in several places at once.  I know I am a skeptic, but I would swear it looks like they just slap a giant Thomas ‘mask’ on an already existing train!! But I’m sure that’s not the case, or they would never get away with charging $18 per person.

First Thomas, Then Dora, Now What – Your Windows??

A.P. started walking when he was 9 months old.  He was running before he was a year.  He was able to get into things before he really understood the word  ’no’.  He also has some hearing issues we didn’t know about yet, so he couldn’t always hear me anyway.  Good times.

Soon after he started walking, he was standing in his favorite spot, right next to the dog and in front of the living room window of our 57 year old house, facing the street.  “How sweet”,  I thought. “A boy and his dog looking out the OH MY GOD IS HE EATING PAINT CHIPS?”

I had recently heard some news about the dangers of lead poisoning in children. I called the pediatrician’s office immediately, who said not to worry; they test children at 9 months when most of them start crawling. So my baby had been eating paint chips for 3 months already? The pediatrician’s office reassured me that it takes a ‘lot of lead’ to poison a baby.  Not satisfied with that answer, I hung up and called the Kent County Health Department. The person I talked with said I needed to have him tested immediately. I had that done and the results were not so good. A blood lead level of 10 is where they start to get worried. A.P. was at a 9, but really, no lead is good lead.
